Art! & Learning!

I feel like my travel writer voice is still a bit wobbly and rusty, so I guess I need more practice to get in the groove.
Today I learned some things. I learned that we fall in the category of "flash packers". Don't be deceived by the backpacks because we've got money to spend, & spend it we will. But I can't spend so much of it on wine. I learned that I can drink beer & like it. And that was confusing for Francis.

I also discovered another thing that enrages a normally even tempered Fran. In twelve years of traveling abroad I've never been harassed until today. Some Thai man passed me on the street & grabbed my arm. It's been years since I've seen Francis holler like that & look ready to throw down. That man slinked away with a sorry, sorry look that should make a baby Buddha cry.
I think I didn't realize what was happening at the time because my mind was buzzing with images from the Jim Thompson House where we spent a leisurely morning. This was our third visit & we still can't get enough. (Yes, I felt compelled to provoke the bitey fish.)

I also remembered a lesson I learned some time ago - some of the best experiences are those chance happenings that you didn't plan and don't cost a thing.
After a very weird lunch at the MBK Mall (we went because the food court was rumored to have some of the best veg food in Bangkok. However, I give it 2 stars... And we did not sample the pizza with the hotdog crust. Ew.)

we wandered across the street to the Bangkok Art & Cultural Center. Mind.Almost.Blown. The first few floors had mostly student art, and I sure was smitten by the sweet Mike Tyson piece.

The upper floors (of which there were many) featured contemporary Thai art. The black lacey piece is about15 feet tall and made out of woven human hair.
And because I love me some bad taxidermy I simply have to share aspects of this installation piece with you.

And we'll wrap up this post with two funny things I discovered in the bathroom at the Art & Cultural Center.
